Mahoney's Days Are Back
NERS needs volunteers for membership drives at Mahoney's Garden Centers.
Regan Duffee | President, New England Rose Society
March 2026
Our membership drives at Mahoney’s Garden Centers are back, and they are always one of the most enjoyable ways we share our love of roses with the broader gardening community.
This year, we will be set up at 1:00 p.m. on:
Saturday, April 25—Winchester, Massachusetts
Sunday, April 26—Tewksbury, Massachusetts
Sunday, May 3—Brighton, Massachusetts

These events are lead by Jeannette Danehy, previous NERS President and head of the rose department for Mahoney’s. In the rose section of Mahoney’s, members set up a table, chat with rose enthusiasts who are shopping for roses, and answer questions. It is a simple concept, but it is incredibly effective. We hand out brochures, talk about our meetings and events, and make people aware that there is an active rose society right here in New England.
Members do not need to be experienced rosarians to participate. Our community includes all types of gardeners, at all degrees of experience, and we love to show that range. When shoppers see that we are beginners, hobbyists, exhibitors, and longtime rosarians all together, it sends a clear message that everyone is welcome. We all share a love for roses.
In previous years, we have set up a “members’ favorite” table. We pull roses that are available for sale that day and showcase them with note cards explaining why we love that particular variety. Maybe it was the first rose someone planted. Maybe it is an unusual color that always catches attention. Those personal stories make the table feel approachable and start great conversations.
More often than not, these afternoons feel like a social hour for our members. We chat roses with customers, but we also enjoy spending time together surrounded by beautiful plants. It is a lot of fun, and it is one of the easiest ways to get involved.
Mahoney’s is one of our biggest supporters. They have donated hundreds of roses in the past few years, and likely thousands throughout NERS’s history. We love supporting them, because they support us.
If you can join us at one of our membership drives this year, we would love to have you there. Sign up, or email info@newenglandrosesociety.org to let us know which day you can attend.
It is a great way to get the word out, meet fellow rose enthusiasts, and represent the New England Rose Society in the best possible way.
